Fanny Slater-Fanfare Catering

From handcrafted lunches to homemade dinners, Fanfare is your resource for all things FOOD.  Specializing in one-of-a-kind gourmet sandwiches, Fanny adds unique flare to your everyday fare.  Forget the turkey on white and let me take you into a world where Balsamic Fig Jam meets Orange-Whipped Goat Cheese.

This is not your typical catering company, this is an “ENTREE-preneur“ on a mission to nourish the stomachs and hearts of Wilmington.

Where does the inspiration for her scratch-made cooking come from?  The moments that make up her life are a feast of cherished culinary encounters.  Fanny believe that each person carries their very own anthology of deliciously rich memories and that in order to honor those experiences—they must be brought back to life.  This passion for recreating those tastes of childhood influences her culinary vision.  With well-seasoned techniques and an epicurean flare, Fanny’s recipes recast her nostalgic classics and transform them into sophisticated fare.  Or Fanfare, as she like to call it.

No food memory left behind.

Captain Doug Springer with Wilmington Water Tours and Alan Smith

photo(23)

Captain Doug Springer/Wilmington Water Tours

Captain Doug Springer and his wife Diane Upton returned to Wilmington in 2004 to pursue their dream of life on the water.  Doug graduated in Marine Technology from Cape Fear Technical Institute in the early 1970’s.  After working in the Gulf of Mexico, and on the waterways of South Carolina for about six years he joined the U.S. Air Force as a computer specialist and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of West Florida.  After many years in the computer industry, and their children well on their own, Doug and Diane returned to their favorite city and back with their family of friends.  They soon formed NE Cape Fear Charters and Exploration and put their beloved 36′ Wilard Vega Trawler to work.  After three years of running a successful charter business, a large number of returning and enthusiastic customers provided the confidence in the belief that a water based tour company designed to serve the Cape Fear River basin at large was needed and thus “Wilmington Water Tours, Inc.” was born.

Doug is also deeply committed to Cape Fear River Watch a local grass roots organization with a mission to improve and protect the water quality of the Cape Fear River Basin. He served as the Executive Director for Cape Fear River Watch, Inc. from July of 2007 to January of 2010 while also doing duty as the Cape Fear RIVERKEEPER ®. The organization has grown to allow for a dedicated ED allowing Doug to focus on the duties of the RIVERKEEPER.

Alan Smith

Alan Smith volunteers for such organizations as: Residents of Old Wilmington, Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron, Cape Fear River Watch, Historic Wilmington Foundation, Domestic Violence Shelter, Interfaith Hospitality Network, and Cape Fear Men’s Club.

Alan has been a Downtown Wilmington resident since 1998. He retired from Navy submarine service and the Central Intelligence Agency. Alan has children and grandchildren here and in Northern Virginia. He cherishes a sense of community within Wilmington and the personal connectedness that comes from involvement with diverse service and “quality of life” organizations. Alan enjoys being in a place where children and grandchildren love to visit and share experiences with boating, beaches and the good life in the historic district.

Bob Dorf Featured on Wilmington Business Radio

Bob DorfWilmington Business Radio had a chance to speak with Bob Dorf recently during the CED Tech Venture Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Bob Dorf is likely the second most knowledgeable Customer Development expert on the planet, second only to its developer and Godfather, Steve Blank. Together the two spent nearly two years conceiving, outlining, drafting, rewriting, and revising the global bestseller, The Startup Owner’s Manual, now a business bestseller in the U.S. and many countries around the world.

A serial entrepreneur, Bob left a lucrative broadcasting job at the age of 22 because he had a passion to start his own company, which he did seven times over three decades. Bob’s track record as a founder, as he says: “two home runs, two base hits, and three great tax losses.”

Bob invested in and coached or advised more than two dozen startups over more than a decade. Seven of them IPO’ed, while six went “straight into the toilet.” In all, he says, “an incredible 42 year entrepreneurial education!”

In March, 2012, Bob published The Startup Owner’s Manual: A Step–By–Step Guide to Building a Great Company, along with Steve Blank. Two years of virtually fulltime research and development yielded his magnum opus: 608 page, painstakingly detailed guide is the most comprehensive, rigorous step–by–step roadmap that is guiding startup founders throughout the world. The Owner’s Manual offers parallel Customer Development pathways for companies in the web and mobile channels, as well as traditional physical goods and enterprise software startups; it also includes indepth web marketing tutorials.

Bob travels the world, helping startups, incubators, governments, and established corporations learn how to effectively deploy Customer Development process through speaking, workshops, and in intensive 8-10 week hands-on Startup Boot Camps. His training takes many forms, including speeches, workshops, and hands — on consulting.

He teaches Customer Development and Business Modeling in full-semester and week-long classes at Columbia Business School, where he is an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship, and has led training sessions at Tech de Monterrey, Mexico, Skolkovo Business School in Moscow, and many other places around the world. He’s counseled dozens of nonprofits probono as well, including the legendary Acumen Fund, a sustainable venture fund.
Bob lives in Stamford, Connecticut with his wife, Fran, a writer, therapist and thrice–published novelist. When he’s not speaking, teaching or writing, Bob is often found on his bicycle or his skis. But Bob’s proudest startup of all is daughter Rachel Dorf Gotler a PhD Psychologist who recently made him a grandpa.
